Bankroll
The total amount of money a player has specifically allocated for gambling sessions.
Blackjack (Natural)
An Ace and a 10-value card are dealt as the initial two cards. In 2026, standard pro tables pay 3:2 for a natural.
Bust
Exceeding a hand total of 21 results in the immediate loss of the wager.
Double Down
Doubling the initial bet in exchange for receiving exactly one additional card. A key move for basic strategy.
Hard Hand
Any hand that either lacks an Ace or contains an Ace that must be valued at 1 to prevent busting.
Insurance
A side bet offered when the dealer’s upcard is an Ace. Note: Statistically, this is an EV bet and is avoided by professional players.
Push
A tie between the player and dealer. The original wager is returned to the player.
Soft Hand
A hand containing an Ace that can be valued at 11 without the total exceeding 21.
Split
Dividing a pair of identical cards into two separate hands by placing an additional bet equal to the first.
Upcard
Players use the dealer’s single visible card to determine their strategic move.
